AD Energy Recruitment is representing a leading international clean energy and resource recovery technology provider, seeking a Process Engineer to join their growing engineering and process optimization team in Italy.

This role plays a critical part in designing, optimizing, and validating the process performance of large-scale biogas, waste-to-energy, and wastewater treatment plants — ensuring high efficiency, reliability, and profitability across all stages of project development.

Mission

Guarantee the optimization of process design and plant performance throughout all project phases, ensuring technical excellence, operational efficiency, and competitive delivery.

Key Objectives

• Develop process concepts, flow diagrams, and system specifications for new and existing plants.

• Ensure process feasibility and sustainability based on input data and performance requirements.

• Size and specify each subsection of the treatment chain while maintaining cost efficiency and compliance with internal standards.

• Support all engineering phases from sales to commissioning, ensuring seamless technical handover between teams.

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of process models, calculation tools, and internal databases.

• Maintain customer satisfaction by ensuring stable and optimized plant performance during commissioning and operation.

Core Responsibilities

• Define and validate feedstock characteristics and treatment specifications.

• Develop process designs, PFDs, and related documentation as per project requirements.

• Define and validate subsystem performance criteria and equipment capacities.

• Contribute to the creation of control strategies and process automation logic in collaboration with controls and electrical teams.

• Prepare commissioning and start-up plans; support testing and performance validation.

• Support Application Engineers during the commercial phase with process expertise and technical documentation.

• Provide on-site support during biological commissioning and early operational phases.

• Conduct performance monitoring and identify opportunities for process optimization.

• Deliver operator training and contribute to customer technical support as needed.

Requirements

Below is a breakdown of the various requirements the role requires:

Experience

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a process engineering role within biogas, wastewater treatment, waste management, or related industrial sectors.

Education

Degree in one of the following disciplines:

• Chemical Engineering

• Environmental Engineering

• Chemistry

• Biology

• Biotechnology

Technical Competencies

• Strong knowledge of process design and simulation tools.

• Experience with anaerobic digestion, waste treatment, or wastewater treatment systems.

• Skilled in developing PFDs, mass/energy balances, and process documentation.

• Ability to define and plan chemical and biological testing programs.

• Good understanding of process control strategies and automation integration.

• Proficiency in using engineering software and IT tools for technical and graphical documentation.

• Fluent in Italian and English (spoken and written).

Desirable Competencies

• Specific experience in anaerobic digestion or organics-to-energy applications.

• Knowledge of additional European languages.
