Substation Structural Engineer uses broad technical knowledge and experience with the structural design components of high voltage electrical substation projects up to 500kV, including steel structure and foundation analysis and design to work closely with Project Managers (PM) and project teams to lead, oversee, review, and/or execute the structural engineering and design components of substation projects.
The Substation Structural Engineer duties include:
• Leading, overseeing, reviewing, and/or executing structural engineering tasks for a variety of substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes, including detailed design, calculations, and detailing for fabrication or development of loading and concept drawings for submittal to a steel fabricator to design and fabricate
• Leading, overseeing, reviewing, and/or executing foundation design tasks for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and potentially other types, using industry standard software
Supporting physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials
• Preparing and reviewing specifications for construction and materials
• Assigning project tasks and providing technical guidance to project team members
• Coordinating and performing quality checks and reviews for project deliverables
• Collaborating with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross-train and share resources; collaborating with other engineers to develop and maintain standards
Responsibilities:
• BSEE required from an ABET accredited university with an emphasis in power system related studies
• Five (5) or more years of increasing engineering experience and responsibility in protection system design and physical substation design is preferred
• Working knowledge of electrical substation physical layout
• Working knowledge of protection and control design for electrical substations
• Working knowledge of load management, automated meter reading (AMR), distribution/transmission automation (SCADA) systems is a benefit but not required
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) License is a benefit, must be able to obtain P.E.
